Southside Premier – "Down in the Old Belt"

The Danville Historical Society and the Danville Community College were pleased to co-host the Southside premier of “Down in the Old Belt - Voices From the Tobacco South” on the DCC campus.

Full size annoucement (69K)This documentary film traces the history and culture of tobacco in the Old Belt of Virginia from its advent in Jamestown through the 2004 tobacco buyout.  It reveals tobacco’s historic decline in context to the land and its farming people.  Danville’s role as a tobacco inspection station, and the Danville system of tobacco auctioning are highlighted.   The Society is grateful to film producer Jim Crawford for his appearance at the premier.
