Historic Designation: Danville Area Chamber of Commerce
Address: 635 Main Street
1985 Owners:
Description:

A commercial structure since it was built in 1923, this fine Georgian Revival building closely resembles many of the houses then being designed by its architect, Bryant Heard. Mr. Heard’s architectural acumen can be seen in many of the fine houses built between the two World Wars along West Main Street and in Forest Hills. He was especially adept at keeping the elements of a given style — be it Colonial Revival, English Tudor, or Spanish Mission — in harmony. Among the public and commercial buildings he designed are Danville’s Municipal Building (1926), the U.S. Post Office (1932), the old City Armory (1931), and the Hotel Danville (1926). This last building, now restored as Danville House, stands across and down Main Street from the Chamber building. It too is open today for viewing its carefully-restored lobby.

The present Chamber of Commerce building was originally the home of F. W. Townes and Son, Inc. Founded in 1892, Townes Funeral Home as it is now known, moved from 531 Main Street to this building in 1923. When Townes left the building for its present location on West Main Street in 1967, the Danville Area Chamber of Commerce moved here from a building, since demolished, that stood across the street. Like all the products of Mr. Heard’s architectural career, the Chamber building is beautifully detailed inside and out. Attractive mantels and a graceful hall staircase are just two examples of such detail.

During this holiday OPEN HOUSE the Chamber, now beginning its second century of service to Danville, is anxious for everyone to see its recently-refurbished headquarters, and learn more about how it serves and promotes the community. Refreshments will be served throughout the afternoon.
