The Colonial Revival home at 174 Mountain View Avenue was built in 1930 as a home for the president of Averett College. The home was originally used for entertaining trustees, college supporters, and alumni while it was the residence of the president and his family. Today, the dwelling is no longer used as a residence, but its original character has been preserved and, as the Office of Institutional Advancement, many of its original uses have been maintained. The building was completed for around $10,000, and it is believed that Dr. J.W. Cammack was the first Averett president to reside in the home. Mr. and Mrs. James Bustard probably lived in the home in 1934—35 while Dr. Cammack was on a study leave. Dr. and Mrs. Curtis Bishop lived here while he was president from 1938—66. Dr. Bishop redecorated the home in 1938 and reports indicate that a classroom and small ‘mnasium were arranged in the basement of the home. Dr. and Mrs. Con- well Anderson lived at 174 Mountain View during his presidency from 1966-79. The home was redecorated at the beginning of Dr. Anderson’s tenure. The small side porch was enclosed for a sunroom, the kitchen was totally remodeled, the family room and a bedroom were added, and the basement was finished as a family recreation area. Dr. and Mrs. Howard Lee lived in the home from 1980—83, when a home at 500 Hawthorne Drive was given to the college and established as the new residence of the president. During the summer of 1983, the house at 174 Mountain View Avenue became known as North Hall and was converted into offices for the staff of Institutional Advancement. Ten persons work in North Hall in development, planned giving, alumni activities and records, news and information, printing and photography, and advancement. Except for fluorescent lighting and office furnishings added to make the residence conducive for work the home is physically no different than it was when it was a residence. |
