In 1907 and 1908 F. Lewis Douthat and Pattie Douthat built their new homes side by side on the first two lots behind the Sutherlin mansion. This was among the last property that Janie P. Sutherlin, the Major’s widow of 15 years, sold from what was once the large rear yard of the antebellum house. In the two decades after the first Sutherlin land was subdivided in 1888, Holbrook and Sutherlin avenues had witnessed rapid development, becoming—along with Main Street—among the most sought after residential sites in Danville. Miss Pattie Douthat’s house at 135 Holbrook Avenue remained in the family for more than 60 years; her last sister Miss Champ Douthat, died here in 1969. For some ten years thereafter it was the property of longtime residents of the street, Mr. and Mrs. N. Lee Isenhour, and from 1981 to 1986 it was the home of Mr. Houston Sharpe. Newly painted gray with white trim, colors characteristic of the Colonial Revival style in turn-of-the-century America, this dwelling is typical of Danville’s sturdy Edwardian-era houses, Atypical however is its striking contemporary decor and furnishings. Rich-hued walls set off the original classical interior appointments and woodwork, all painted gleaming white by the present owner. |
