Situated on an authentic railroad track, this “Chessie” caboose once belonged to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. Built for the railroad in 1976, it was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Swicegood in 1988. Restoration began on the caboose in November 1988, and was completed in August 1989. The unit was made possible through the courtesy of the CSX Corp. The caboose weighs 66,000 lbs. or 33 tons and is constructed of steel with thermol-pane windows. It has had its original exterior paint colors lovingly restored to the authentic B & 0 Railroad caboose colors. All Iron-work Is original and It has its original door and brass number for the B &O Railroad. The only exterior changes were made to the rear where there once was a rear porch, now enclosed as part of the Interior bath. Outside one can see the original oil can used when the train had to make frequent stops in order to oil the ball bearings so that they would not overheat. The Interior is quite extraordinary with Interior features and modern amenities to please any overnight guests of the Swicegood’s. The luxurious apartment has all original wiring behind Mr. Swicegood’s own hand-crafted woodwork and cabinetry. Everything on the interior is solid brass and the furniture was brought back from trips abroad. There is on display original B & O china, conductor’s buttons and assorted railroad memorabilia for those railroad buffs who delight in the history of train lore. |
