Description:

For 115 years this massive Gothic Revival landmark has closed the vista created as Patton Street rises to meet Jefferson Avenue. Like its predecessor church buildings, this brick and stucco edifice was built originally for the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church, which erected its first church—the first ever in Danville— on this site in 1828. Two years earlier, on December 31, 1826, the Presbyterians had been the first congregation of any denomination to organize in Danville.

About the time the Presbyterians left to occupy their present sanctuary at 973 Main Street, their Jefferson Avenue church was sold, in 1910, to the congregation of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), which continues to worship here. After more than eight decades members of First Christian continue to cherish this fine old structure which, except for its steeple which came down in a 1938 storm, retains most of its original features. Mellow walnut pews, heart pine floors and an extraordinary pressed tin ceiling, all echo the history of the venerable sanctuary. In addition, the national Organ Historical Society lauded the church’s 1899 Moller Organ, Opus 266, as a superior example of organ building from the Romantic Period. It carries the distinction of being the oldest such instrument in Danville still in its original location.

A source of particular pride for the congregation was the restoration this past summer of the lancet-arched stained and enamel glass windows flanking the sanctuary, as well as the magnificent rose window just above the front doors. Their jewel-like colors and complex geometry enliven the sanctuary and inspire those who worship or visit.

Music of the season will be heard periodically throughout the afternoon on the church’s historic Moller Organ, dating from 1899.
