22nd Annual Walking Tour Archive – Danville Historical Society
Historic Designation: | W.A. Cherry House |
Address: | 912 Main Street |
1994 Owners: | Mr. & Mrs. French Conway |
Description: |
An ancient oak, remnant of an original grove of nearly two acres, shades the Queen Anne house built in 1898 for W.A. and Maggie Cherry on land once owned by Captain James Lanier, Danville’s first mayor. The two-and-a-half story clapboard dwelling still features the original second floor bay, shingled gables, and the delicate Ionic front porch that has welcomed guests through its leaded glass entryway for nearly a century. In 1905, J. Pemberton Penn, son of the builder of 862 Main Street, purchased the home and added a central heating system. In 1917, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hall took title to the property, where they remained for 45 years before selling to the Conways in 1962. Mrs. Conway, a local ASID decorator, has been sensitive to the original features in adapting the home with extensive additions to the rear. Architectural details salvaged from the old Rison home, which stood at 1002 Main Street prior to the present Wednesday Club, have been incorporated into their renovations. |
