Actually the second dwelling to be constructed in Forest Hills, this eclectic Free Colonial home was built in 1926 as a family venture by three siblings, C. Stamps Flippen, Ruth Flippen Hurdle, Virginia Flippen Carpenter, and their mother, Annie Lewis Flippen. Designed by J. Bryant Heard, it was first a family residence, and eventually became the home of C. Stamps Flippen and his wife, the former Marguerite Townes in the 1940’s. Mr. Flippen was the President-Treasurer of J.T. Townes Printing Company located for years at the corner of South Union and Patton Streets. It was sold in 1979 to Dr. Martha Silverstein, who practiced medicine with Dr. Herbert Silverman on Gray Street. In 198 1, the home was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Martin H. Suggs. Mr. Suggs was Vice President for Bank of Virginia, now Signet Bank. In 1983, Mr. and Mrs. J. Martin Scott, Jr. purchased the home after relocating from Milton, NC. At the time, Mr. Scott was an Assistant Vice President at Dibrell Brothers, Inc. Mrs. Scott was an Assistant Professor at Danville Community College. Mrs. Scott, well-known in the community for her talent in the garden, has extensively re-landscaped the yard, a favorite site on recent Garden Club of Virginia tours. The holiday arrangements throughout the home exemplify her finesse with horticulture and design. In his extensive travels as a tobacconist, Mr. Scott has returned with art, rugs, and unusual collectibles from China, the Philippine Islands, Zimbabwe, India, Mexico, Rhodesia, and Malawi to name a few of the origins of the decor on view today. Two heirlooms from Mrs. Scott’s family that should not be missed on tour include the violin in the living room that dates to the 1880’s ownership by her great grandfather and a spinning wheel in the kitchen from the mid-1700’s. |
