Description: |
Approaching this classic English Tudor Revival home, the visitor is charmed by the eclectic mix of brick, stone, slate and copper, among the most handsome designs produced by J. Bryant Heard, Danville’s most prolific architect. The inviting pavilion front porch is flanked on opposite sides by a solarium and an open porch, giving balance to the facade. One of the earliest dwellings constructed in Forest Hills, it was built in 1928 for Dr. C. Bruce Williams, a local dentist who practiced in the now-demolished Arcade Building downtown. Shortly after Forest Hills was annexed into Danville in 1932, city tax records reflected the value of the house at $11,400. in 1955, Laura H. Williams sold the home to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Eugene Rowe. Mr. Rowe was Secretary-Treasurer of Dan River Mills. In 1968, the home was purchased by its current owner, Martha Jordan Chukinas. During the tour, visitors will appreciate the skill of the architect in creating a floorplan with good circulation from formal to family areas. The mantel in the formal livingroom is an exceptionally handsome example of Neo-classical design. An avid traveler, Mrs. Chukinas has collected many choice items on her visits to England, Scandinavia, Europe, and Japan. The works of many regional artists are displayed in her home along with woodcrafts of Dr. Howard Lee, a former president of Averett College. Of special note is the 1903 photograph from Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, of the first flight of the Wright Brothers. This particular photograph was taken by a young Coast Guardsman, Martha’s grandfather, who happened to volunteer to assist that eventful day. |
