Description:

Through the generosity of Averett College and the dedication of Anne Banks, Board Member of the Society, music will delight the holiday tour guests throughout the afternoon. The handbell choirs of First Presbyterian Church under the direction of Robert Sutter, and Sacred Heart School under the direction of Diane Moran, will both perform for our enjoyment. Russell Scruggs and his merry carollers in period costumes will entertain at Grousbeck and at many of the tour homes.

A local philanthropist, Emily Swain Grousbeck who was interested in music her entire life, gave the funds to build this facility for the college in 1991. She also donated a music building for nearby Ferrum College. Dr. Gail Allen, has been at the helm for the Department of Music since 1976, and oversees the Bachelor of Music program for the college.

Performances will be held in the Margaret Lee Recital Hall, named for the wife of Dr. Howard Lee, President Emeritus at Averett. Refreshments will be served in the ‘rotunda’, a large circular space in the front entrance hall.

We are indebted to the benevolence of the following pianists for their contributions to our tour:

•Mr. Tom Aiken, musician and industrialist
•Mrs. Frances Kepchar; artist, musician, and teacher
•Ms. Anne Lewis, Averett College Music Professor and accompanist for the Danville Area Choral Arts Society

•Mrs. Joan Sutter Christian Coordinator at First Presbyterian Church and teacher
•Mrs. Eutha S. Wells, organist at Moffett Memorial Church for more than 45 years
