Historic Designation: Charlie G. Rogers House
Address: 287 Linden Drive
1995 Owners: Mr. & Mrs. Jerry Jacobus
Description:

n 1934, the Forest Hills Development Corporation sold these lots to Mr. and Mrs. Charlie 0. Rogers who built this modest brick Cape Cod in 1937, upon which the City assigned a tax value of $3000 for their improvements. Mr. Rogers was then foreman at P. Lorillard Co., Inc.

In 1939, the home was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Landon Home. Mr. Home was then Trust Officer and Vice resident of the First National Bank. The Homes’ resided here until his widow, Bess Home, now living at Stratford House, sold the home to the Jacobus family in 1993.

Mrs. Jacobus invited their son, Brian, an architect in Warwick, New York, to re-create the home to Suit their lifestyle which had become firmly entrenched in a log home in the mountains of New Jersey before relocating with C.M. Offray, Inc., ribbon manufacturer. For months, local contractors removed walls, added windows and French doors, relocated plumbing, and created fireplaces to fashion a home with 1990’s amenities. The kitchen miraculously was adapted from a 1937 model with nooks, halls, five doorways, and a pantry into a state of the art culinary delight. The rear porch has a new life as an inviting and light-filled family dining area with French doors to the deck and garden and a fireplace that warms many an evening conversation with guests. A low gloss finish on the hardwood floors creates a patina of fine furniture. The decor reflects the owners’ many visits to Germany, Austria, and Poland and a keen appreciation of artisan crafts. Furnishings include attractive family pieces from a Wisconsin lake home, and a tea chest and parochial-school desk from Mrs. Jacobus’ childhood. The master bedroom suite includes an upstairs addition with a bath, as well as a sitting room with windows topped by fanlight transoms, a design borrowed from the new French doors downstairs.

All the ribbons used on the Christmas tree and throughout the house are made by Offray.
