A full-length front porch welcomes visitors to this comfortable raised dwelling of bungalow inspiration, typical of WW I-era domestic taste. Only a few years after it was built for 1W. and Mary Evelyn Dixon in 1917, the property was purchased by Mr. Marvin Stephenson, who owned one of Danville’s landmark pharmacies of the early 20th century, Stephenson’s Drug Store. From 1919 to 1950, Mr. Stephenson leased the property to a succession of well-known citizens, among them Danville’s longtime public school superintendent, G.L.H. Johnson, and his family. Here also the attorney J. William Clement spent his youth, first with parents and siblings, and later with his young bride. For nearly 40 years thereafter, a highly- respected tobacconist, Ben Morton, a Virginia Tobacco Company executive, and his family made their home here during which time they substantially enlarged and improved the dwelling. Since 1992 the present owners, Edward and Fran Wailer, have taken maximum advantage of the gracious qualities of the house. A wide, open hallway and pocket doors opening to adjoining rooms, attest immediately to the home’s spatial qualities which the owners have enhanced with subtle appointments, complemented by American antique pieces cherished by generations of both their families. |
