Passersby recognize this dwelling immediately as the “house with the ship” sailing serenely in a prominent cast panel adorning its tall chimney of red-brown brick. Diamond-paned windows, brick laid in English bond, and other quaint Tudor Revival features complete this compact study in the picturesque comfort of English cottage style. The local architect Roger B. Davis modeled the house, it is said, after one in Durham, North Carolina. An integral garden wall and matching detached garage, features dear to the hearts of Americans between the two World Wars, complete the harmonious design, all capped off with roofing slates moulded to resemble wood shakes. After its construction by the contractor P.L. Anderson in 1931, the house was home to Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Aiken. Archibald M. Aiken, a well-known Danville attorney and judge, lived here with his family for about a dozen years. Following World War II, several other well-known Danville families—notably Mr. and Mrs. William R. Smith, Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. Gus Dyer, among others— made this address their home for many years. Since 1998, when it was acquired by the present owners, the house has been undergoing a systematic renewal. Historic features like the rich oak woodwork and gleaming quartersawn floors typical of the period, have been refurbished, complemented by new features like an updated kitchen respectful of the character of the original house. |
