Dan River Crossing represents the first major private sector development in Danville's Tobacco District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1981. This is an area which even earlier was the focus of a 1978 study by
the Historic American Engineering (HAER) to document and suggest strategies for reuse of aging tobacco factories and related structures of historic significance.

The conversion of a former 1890s prizery/cigar factory, linked to a 1920s industrial-era printing firm, is exactly the sort of adaptive use the young HAER planners and architects had in mind more than a quarter century ago to preserve
Danville's character and recycle its most precious assets. 

Although Danville began as a tobacco town—first as a place for inspection and marketing, and later for processing and manufacturing—the city's claim to fame was not products for smoking. The former factory at 601 Bridge Street was a rarity when it rolled out cigars for a few years in the early 1900s; it's survival is even more rare today.  

Dan River Crossing: Senior Apartment Community is a $9.5 million rehab by Florida-based developers, Finlay Management, Inc. Located near the riverfront, these apartments overlook city facilities like the community market, walking trails, and Carrington Pavilion. It's a stone's throw from the Danville Science Center, and Amtrak's Danville depot with daily connections to New York and New Orleans. 

An apartment will be open for inspection during the afternoon. Each of these spacious one- and two-bedroom floor plans has a fully-equipped kitchen, central HVAC, stacked washer/dryer, with utilities included. Mr. Ken Sheetz, property manager, will be on hand to answer questions about the facility.
