The Carriage House, adjacent to the Francis Xavier Burton Tobacco Factory, reflects a charming adaptive reuse as the private residence of Larry and Virginia Williams. Built originally as a stable for horses, it demonstrates dramatically the creativity of Broad Reach Enterprises LLC, of Richmond, in converting these buildings into the award-winning Burton Condominiums along the cobblestones of Bridge Street. This two-story residence affords a great room with gas-log fireplace and a delightful kitchen supported by a palette of distressed hickory flooring. The original brick walls and stable windows hark back to the 1870s as Danville's economy emerged from Reconstruction. Upstairs, the has loft has been converted to a den landing, laundry closet, two bedrooms, and two baths. The master suite overlooks the courtyard with native landscaping. The carriage house decor is a collaboration by Mrs. Williams with the talented designer Alisa Gillespie of nearby M&M Furniture. Holiday decorations using native greenery, created by Mr. Rosen of M&M Florist in Chatham, enhance the smell of an historic Christmas. Burton Condos are set in the largest of Danville's six National Register historic districts, the Tobacco Warehouse District (TWD). Created in 1951, the TWD grew out of research by a team of thirteen young professionals with the Historic American Engineering Record, hired by the City of Danville. Bounded on the north by the Dan River and on the east by Amtrak’s Crescent line, the TWD has benefited from numerous Transportation Enhancement Grants from Virginia's Department of Transportation for the nearby Crossing at the Dan. The Williams were early purchasers at Burton Condo and own an additional courtyard condo unit that has been leased successfully to many newcomers to the area. Nearby, the gracious lobby commons, featuring contemporary furniture designed by Martha Stewart, will delight tour-goers as it does residents and their guests daily. |
