35th Annual Walking Tour Archive – Danville Historical Society

Historic Designation: F. X. Burton Plug & Twist Factory
Address: 522 Bridge Street, Unit 2
2007 Owners: Lynne Bjarnesen
Description:

Overlooking Bridge Street cobblestones and LunaNanoWorks, the new home of Lynne Bjarnesen at The Burton can best be described as artist-in-residence.  Tour-goers will be treated to the owner’s oil pastels, etchings and collographs, plus her diverse collections of other artists.  Lynne no longer maintains an art studio, but has shown and sold her work regionally.

As Executive Director of the Danville Museum of Fine Arts & History since 1999, Lynne was attracted to Burton Condo by the urbane style – new to Danville – afforded by these unique dwellings. Lynne chose the last available "B" floor plan for its larger kitchen and arboreal views of historic Neapolis on the north bank of the Dan River.

Furnishings range eclectically from Pier One to priceless family antiques and furniture hand-crafted by her late husband, Dr. Walter Bjarnesen.  Dr. Bjarnesen’s cabinetmaking skills are evident in the grandfather clock, a breakfront, and five walnut bookcases he crafted during their life together.  Most of the volumes lining the shelves derive from Walter’s extensive and eclectic collection, including many nautical books.  From Walter’s family, too, is a German early-Victorian burled secretary that migrated progressively from Denmark to Michigan to Danville.  From Lynne’s father, she inherited the American early-19th century cherry game table and high-style Edwardian wine cellar.

Holiday décor, with assistance from Motley Florist, includes a fresh tree decked in tones of gold and rust.  In lieu of more elaborate Christmas trappings, Lynne's emphasis remains on the architectural elements inherent in the F. X. Burton Factory interior.  Its massive post-and-beam factory construction and heart pine floors make a striking counterpoint to contemporary sculptural walls and layout, introduced by the Johannas Design Group of Richmond.  Such appealing features now redefine this loft as well as the seventeen other handsome condominiums at The Burton.
