35th Annual Walking Tour Archive – Danville Historical Society

Historic Designation: First Presbyterian Church / First Christian Church
Address: 200 Jefferson Avenue
2007 Owners: Sacred Spaces – Joe and Homeretta Ayala
Description:

In a community known as a "City of Churches," this striking High Victorian Gothic style edifice survives not only as an architectural landmark – closing the vista from downtown looking south up Patton Street – but also as a tangible reminder of its long, rich history with two Danville congregations.  Built in 1879, it was the third house of worship built on the site for members of First Presbyterian Church, the city's oldest congregation, founded in 1826.  After that congregation moved to its present Main Street church in 1911, First Christian Church purchased the Jefferson Avenue church, where its congregation worshipped until disbanding in 2004.

The building’s third incarnation, Sacred Spaces, came to Danville by way of its present owners, both church musicians active in Baltimore.  It was the historic Moller organ – one of the earliest in its original site surviving in the nation – that closed the deal.  Having now completed the first phase of refurbishing the building, these motivated owners soon will embark on restoring the organ, as they continue to offer the structure as a handsome venue for receptions, weddings, and meetings, such as the first-ever Danville Preservation Summit in September 2007.  Sacred Spaces will host a special seasonal concert for tour-goers on Saturday afternoon, December 8.
