Address: 695 Park Avenue
2011 Owners: Genesis Day Spa
Description:

For 66 years the property at 695 Park Avenue has remained in the family of Thomas Edward Wright. In 1937 a young Thomas E. Wright and Fannie M. Wright moved to Danville to work at Dan River Mills. They rented a house in the Westover community while Mr. Wright with help from his brother in-law, built a residence for his young family at 691 Park Avenue.

In 1945, Mr. Wright bought the lot adjoining his residence, had a building constructed, and opened T. E. Wright’s Grocery. The country store (this area had not been annexed by the City of Danville at the time) offered staple goods, a meat department with meat cutter, gas pumps and home delivery of groceries.

The business also contained a U.S. Postal Contract Station. Thomas Wright was the postmaster and after his retirement for health reasons at the age of 65, Mrs. Wright became the first postmistress in Pittsylvania County. Through the years, the Wrights gave up the meat department and gas pumps, but added a gift shop and consignment shop.

In 1981, Mrs. Wright closed the business to care for Mr. Wright. The building remained empty for a short time and then became rental property. In 2008-2009, Catherine M. Adkins, a great-granddaughter of the original owners, purchased the property and converted it into Genesis Day Spa and Salon.

During the renovation three layers of linoleum floor were removed, cinder block walls were covered, antique-looking stations were added and rooms were built to create the space that houses several hair stylists, an airbrush make-up artist, a nail specialist, a massage therapist, and an esthetician.
