Cable Cars

The following year I started school in Pomona but did not attend regularly, the walk being too long.  Sister Bertha helped by carrying me piggyback part of the way, but it proved too much for her.

The next term, in 1882, I went to live with sister Sophie in Philadelphia and attended school there.  On my way to and from school I found lots of attractions.  There was a marble cutting yard, and I often watched them cutting the stone with a large gauge saw.  There also was a millwork shop where I watched them saw lumber.

Coming home rather late one day, sister asked me, "Where have you been so long?" I told her I was watching them make sawdust.  My sister wrote home and told about that, and thereafter I had to hear about cutting up lumber to make sawdust.

My brother-in-law, Willie Schaab used to take me out for a walk, Sundays, in the park and zoo as well as about town.

On Market Street they were taking up the horse car truck and putting in a conduit and track for a cable car line.

In City Hall courtyard the statue of William Penn was set up, ready to be placed on the tower when completed.
