Trolley Cars

When Sister Sophie Schaab lived in Atlantic City, I spent frequent weekends at the shore.

In those days seashells were plentiful, also submerged ocean plants of many types.  Many could be found if one got to the beach in the early morning before the excursion trains arrived.

Here, I also got lots of amusement watching Mike Sharp, the blacksmith, shoeing the mules for the streetcars in his smithshop on Surf Avenue.  They were lively creatures and some had to be thrown and their feet bound.

Several years later, in 1889, trolley cars were substituted for mules and I was there to ride in the first car.

Atlantic City had trolley cars long before many of the larger cities, where they were thought to be a fire hazard because of the overhead wires.
